BalPhin research training course: Analytic and Continental Ethics Research Training Course: Analytic and Continental Ethics May 24th - 30th The course is designed to update the knowledge of the Baltic and Nordic researchers and doctoral students of philosophy in the crucial areas of continental and analytic ethics. It will concentrate on the central topics of the ethical inquiry of these fields, with special attention paid to explicating the methods and criteria of high quality research. These goals will be realized through the use of pre-assigned reading material, and a carefully planned structure of lectures, workshops and research clinics managed by distinguished academics of the field. The persons in charge of the training are Professor Russ Shafer-Landau, an eminent specialist of ethics from University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA and Professor Hans Ruin, a well-known expert in Continental philosophy and one of the founders of the Nordic Society for Phenomenology, from Södertörn University College, Sweden. Assistant teachers will be Doctor Olli Loukola (Analytic ethics) and Doctor Kristian Klockars (Continental ethics), both experienced teachers and reseachers from the Department of Social and Moral Philosohy of the University of Helsinki. The course aims in particular in enhancing the methods and skills of the researchers to the level required at the cutting edge of international philosophical research.
The course consists of 20 hours of lectures of the central contemporary topics of the field; 16 hours of workshops dedicated for clarification and discussions of these topics in relation to individual research; and finally of two 4 hour research clinic, where these research topics of the participants will be analysed and streamlined to accord to the best standards and practices of the trade. The course is coordinated together with the Department of Social and Moral Philosophy of University of Helsinki, and Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu. It will take place in Tartu, Estonia on 24-30 of May 2009 and it will be hosted by the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu.
