The first part of the book collection of the world famous semiotician Thomas A. Sebeok arrived at the University of Tartu in the year 2007, the second part in 2011. This collection consisting of nearly five thousand volumes proves Tartu to be one of the most estimable semiotics centres in the world.
Thomas A. Sebeok (1920-2001) was the world leader of semiotics for over 30 years. He was the editor-in-chief of the International Semiotics Association’s journal Semiotica from 1969, when it was founded, until his death. He is known as one of the founders of zoosemiotics, but he was active in several other fields of semiotics, also a fruitful editor and publisher. Among others he was the editor of the book series "Approaches to Semiotics" (over a hundred volumes).
In Sebeok’s memorial library one can find most important books pubished in the 20th century on biology, bio- and zoosemiotics, but also on the general theory of semiotics and all aspects of cultural semiotics.
