Admission to the Semiotics Doctoral Program
Application is possible either to a state-financed study place (application deadline is in the beginning of June, or to a non-state financed study place (application period: throughout the year). In the latter case the student has to show proof of his income in the value of the monthly stipend (scientific grant, or project). In either cases there is no tuition fee. The state-financed study place will provide a stipend of 660 EUR/month by the University of Tartu.
For admission, a doctoral thesis project is required. When preparing it, a candidate is required to consult the potential supervisor from the Department of Semiotics (K. Kull, P. Torop, M. Lotman, T. Maran, A. Randviir, E. Sütiste, A. Ventsel, T. Remm, R. Magnus, S. Salupere or K. Lindström) who will help in preparing the project. In addition to the supervisor in Tartu, a student may have a consulting supervisor (or a co-supervisor) from any university in the world. Please see further information about the research done by the staff members at: www.flfi.ut.ee/en/department-semiotics/staff (click on the names to see further links). In order to apply for a position the applicant must have a supervisor from the University of Tartu, Department of Semiotics.
The candidates to a state-financed study place are expected to come to Tartu for an oral examination, which consists of the defense of the project in the end of June (at the day announced ). The oral examination might also be arranged to take place via Skype and in that case the candidate is not expected to show up for an interview in person. The arrangement of the defense of the project for the candidates to a non-state financed study place will be decided on an individual basis.
In addition to the creative research environment and a fascinating group of scholars, University of Tartu Semiotics Department provides a series of general and special courses on various branches of semiotics in English, both from local and visiting scholars. Thus every student can find in Tartu all the possibilities that meet his or her scholarly needs in the best way.
